About the Workshop

The 1st HyCAM International Workshop: “Towards Hydrogen-Based Fuel Combustion Enabled by Additive Manufacturing” will take place from 21–23 October 2026 in Sorrento, Italy.

The workshop aims to advance efficient, low-emission and fuel-flexible thermochemical energy conversion of hydrogen-based fuels considering the vast design space provided by additive and other modern manufacturing techniques (AM).

To address the challenges associated to hydrogen-based fuel combustion, the workshop promotes an interdisciplinary approach leveraging the new opportunities from combining combustion science, materials science, and AM for developing highly optimized combustion systems in terms of efficiency, flexibility, and emissions.

The workshop will bring together leading experts from academia and industry to foster interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration. We invite contributions showcasing this integrated approach, but also research in the individual disciplines promoting it. Topics include:

  • Hydrogen (H2) and ammonia (NH3) combustion
  • Advanced AM processes and materials for combustion and energy systems
  • Combustor and burner design optimization
  • Complex burner geometries enabled by AM
  • Materials–flame interactions
  • Experimental diagnostics and numerical simulations
  • Turbulence–chemistry interaction modeling
  • Pollutant formation and mitigation strategies
  • Industrial applications of AM-enabled combustion technologies

Ph.D. students and early-career researchers are particularly encouraged to participate. Selected contributions will be invited for submission to a special issue of Applications in Energy and Combustion Science. Free registration will be offered to selected contributions to encourage broad international participation.

→ The workshop is organized and funded by the DFG Priority Program SPP 2419 HyCAM: “A Contribution to the Realisation of the Energy Transition: Optimisation of Thermochemical Energy Conversion Processes for the Flexible Utilisation of Hydrogen-based Renewable Fuels Using Additive Manufacturing”
